Exciting news from Germany: This week Meltwater was announced as winner of the “Great Places to Work” Award in Germany. Meltwater was ranked 27th out of the top 100 companies across all different industries – amongst them well-known companies such Accenture, 3M, Microsoft, O2 as well as other SMEs like Telecom Systems, Dis Ag and Tchibo.

Ursula von der Leyen, the Employment Minister in Germany congratulated all winning companies and acknowledged the high satisfaction rate of their employees.

How it all started:

Five years ago today was my first day at Meltwater. I had never heard about the company before I joined. I only knew that I was going to start in a sales role within a small Norwegian start-up that had ambitions to expand globally. The company had only 60 employees in Northern Europe back then and together with two Norwegian managers (Ingolf and Fredrik), our team of four new hires ( Christiane, Sonna, Inga and myself) entered the German speaking market. In April this year Meltwater sponsored the German AIESEC National Kick-Off Conference in Bielefeld, Germany. Together with two recruitment managers, Kathrin Pamp and Navina Sharma, we gave a presentation on career opportunities at Meltwater Group as well as at our non-profit organization, Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Ghana.

AIESEC is the world’s largest student-run organization – with over 45,000 members in 107 countries and territories. Their aim is to create a platform for young people to develop their leadership skills in a global learning environment- by offering international internships as well as leadership trainings.

20 years ago, the Berlin Wall came down, symbolizing the end of a four-decade partition of Germany, with whole families split, and the suppression of a part of the German population. With that day and the reunification of Germany, the lives of many countless people were changed forever. Each August, the new incoming class of Entrepreneurs in Training (EITs) begin their training at Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST).

The third group of EITs, the class of 2011, started at MEST this month. Their goal: learn how to start a software company that sells to international markets.

As I looked at these eager new EITs, I realized they were all very excited about the awesome opportunity that lay in front of them. They each had the ability to showcase their skills while proving to the world that talent does exists in Ghana. So I wondered if they also felt a bit overwhelmed…
