I always knew that I wanted to work internationally no matter which company I joined. After joining the International Management Trainee program at Meltwater, the kicker came when instead of moving to the UK, the US or some other English speaking location, I was offered a place on the team charged with taking Meltwater into Japan.
Hello Kitty, Cosplay, game shows and sushi – these were the extent of my knowledge of Japanese culture, so stepping off the plane, I was unsure what to expect. Sensory overload. Unending neon lights, ear-splitting noise from semitrailers playing the latest J-pop hit singles, fashion I never…

“Focus on Focus”. When I first heard this phrase, I was sitting in a conference room for my second day of training in Meltwater’s London office. My immediate thought was: “How cliché. With their great, gnashing, razor sharp teeth and thrashing tail, Great White Sharks became the resident monster that lurked in the ‘depths’ of the swimming pool and on the ‘other side’ of the bath tub. I don’t know about you, but I was a scaredy cat to the core and have always had a fascination with these amazing creatures. Locals here in South Africa have an unspoken understanding with the wildlife inhabiting shared spaces. Basically, it comes down to leaving one another alone – you can admire from afar in ‘oohs and aahs’…
